Finding fish can be a challenge, but the more you know about your quarry, the more likely you are to be successful.

One of the top complaints from newbie Charlotte Harbor fishermen is not being able to find fish. Many of these anglers think they need to get a few “secret spots” and that will solve their problems. If you’re one of these folks, I have some advice you need: Spots won’t help you. Thinking like a fish will.

Really, it’s not that hard to put yourself in a fish’s scales. Let’s pick a spot from the map on page 12: Two Pines. This is a fishy area, but it’s easy to go there and catch nothing at all. That’s because fish don’t utilize all of the water all of the time. Figuring out where they’ll be starts with dissecting the area into microhabitats.
